Unity for a 2D MMORPG and GUI

Me and more few guys are wanting to do a simple 2D MMORPG. Firstly, don't waste your time talking about how impossible is to do a 2D MMORPG with few people, its doesn't matter. Sorry if i'm sound rude, but people always want to talk about that. We already have the Server, and we want to do the Client. We have a lot of options, but we want to develop it really fast, and to do it, we need a framework and a tools already made. Unity seems really appeal, but there are some problems:

  • Unity Editor is overkill for a 2D game, we will not edit scenes or anything 3D on it, if i understand Unity correctly, we only will use scripting features and only use the Editor to build the game. Of course, we want to use 3D sound, shadders, etc.

  • Immediate GUI seems bad for fast building of a complex layout/GUI( as needed for a MMORPG ).

Is unity a really good option for us build the Client? I have not found any good retained GUI for Unity, and we don't want to waste time building one.

My questions are simple, is unity suited for 2D MMORPG with a rich GUI with fast prototyping?

BTW: Look at NGUI or EZGUI. Unity is co$$anonymous$$g out with a revamped internal GUI system 'in the near future', date TBD.

Both are paid. I'm willing to use Unity Free because i don't want to spend money( because i don't have hauheuha ).

Well, all I can tell you is that all the tools are there. If you want to make things easier, you may have to pay money. If you want to do it for free, it will probably be harder. Other than that I don't know what to tell you - whether to use Unity vs any other game engine / editor out there is entirely a matter of personal preference. You have to try out a few and see what works best for you and your $$anonymous$$m.
