Unity plugin for .gif files?
It's a huge pain that unity doesn't support gifs. Is there a plugin I can get on the asset store which will allow me to use gifs in my game?
What program are you using to create GIFs? Surely it can save as PNG ins$$anonymous$$d?
It's unlikely you'd want to use GIFs for anything; there's not any compelling reason for Unity to support it.

Whatever type of source images you use, Unity converts them on import and saves as assets.
So there is no advantage in using some formats over others except in editing with 3rd party software. I prefer to save images as .psd, so I can edit them with PhotoShop.
Furthermore, some formats can not be imported.

I've used UniGif successfully before, maybe with some tweaks you can use it for the purposes you want.
