Just tried importing a couple of models directly, and it seems to work fine - at least for those models. I did notice that I ended up with all models from the blend file - normally when I export as FBX, I choose to export only the selected model - I don't' want the full-detail mesh for example, which is much too detailed for Unity work. Not sure you can control this if you save the .blend file directly rather than go through the export process?
As for materials, those I've tried seem to work just fine, but I really think you need to go through yourself if you want to check whether specific material parameters work or not. Hope this is helpful.

I'm using blender 2.62 with Unity 3.5, and the blender materials seem to import fine: I have models with textures and also with simple ambient/diffuse/specular properties (non-texture), and these import fine. Note that I am exporting from blender as FBX, mind. Were you talking about export of .blend files directly?
@borus I was talking about .blend files or FBX. It does not matter which way just as long as it is possible. Do you know if every single Blender material parameter is importable? And now that you speak about .blend files, can one import a Blender 2.62 .blend file directly?
