Show render stats in GUI

I'm trying to get things like poly, vert and tri count in code to display in a GUIText at built runtime, but everywhere I look there are just unanswered questions or people pointing to the stats windows in the game view or third party tools.

If anyone has any info on how to do this it would be greatly appreciated.
