Question by Johnnemann · May 01, 2013 at 05:39 AM · performanceprimitives

Do Unity primitives incur performance penalties? If so, why?

I've heard that one shouldn't use Unity primitives in a scene, as it will negatively impact your performance. I can't find any real data to back this up, though, and it doesn't make intuitive sense to me. Aside from a potentially overlarge number of verts on the plane primitive, there shouldn't be any reason rendering the built-in cubes or spheres is a performance drag.

Can anyone enlighten me one way or another?

So whatever you heard on this topic, is totally wrong.

All video games are made, fundamentally, with unity primitves -- the primitive shape colliders.

(You almost never use mesh colliders for any reason, only in obscure cases.)

Honestly I would completely dismiss this thought -- go for it, and use primitives as much as you want! Heh.
