Can material animation be exported from maya and imported into unity ?
Unity Version 4.5.x
Maya Version 2014
FBX Exporter 2014.0.1
Hello,
I am an engineer that has been assigned to the 3d art team for a game project.
They are creating material animations in Maya for effects objects (magic etc)
and they complaining that they are unable to import the material animations into Unity.
Can material animation be exported from Maya and imported into unity in the first place ?
Does the FBX exporter handle material animation ? If so, is there a way to properly import the data into unity ? If not, are there recommended plugins or methods for doing this ?
The art team does not want to have to remake their animations in unity. They just want to create, export and go.
Look forwards to your replies.

Hi - the short answer is no, I'm afraid. Unity only imports animation from rigged meshes or blendShapes. You can only animate materials created inside the editor - for example: sprite sheet animation and UV scrolling with the appropriate shader. There might be ways of automating their setup in Unity using the AssetPostProcessor and your texures, but it would really depend on what kind of material animation you are doing. If you have a specific workflow you'd like considered for an import pipeline please add details to a feature feedback entry here:
