Create and swap textures on iPad

Heyo Unity Folks!

Standard forum greeting: I'm somewhat new to Unity, love it's potential, but I hit a snag. I'm getting pretty good at hunting down my own answers in the forum, but this one is a pickle. Any help would be most appreciated!

So I'm building a basic program for the iPad that will let a user swap textures on a 3d mesh with a button press. Simple enough, but here's the tricky part:

I want the user to be able to create NEW textures on the iPad using Autodesk Sketchbook Pro, then save these images as PNGs, and then have my program recognize these new PNGs as swappable textures on the 3d mesh. This is where I'm struggling.

  • First, and most basic, can anyone point me to some advice on how to create a directory Load panel accessible through the program? For example, (while running on iPad) I would click a "Load Texture" button, and a directory panel would open up allowing me to select a file. Everything I've found has been about extending the Unity Editor, not the program itself.

  • Next, with a Unity-created program on iPad, is it possible to script a function that will look OUTSIDE the Unity project directory for assets (namely PNGs living in the iPhoto gallery directory)?

  • Finally, once a Unity project is loaded onto the iPad, is it's entire directory read-only? If not, I could save images directly to my Textures folder and bypass the iPhoto b.s.

These questions may seem a tad asinine, but I can't find a clear solution or direction yet. Again, any help is most welcome!

Russell

BTW, I work in 3d animation, so if anyone is up for trading services, I'm Maya proficient and a solid character designer :)
