exporting into unity
In blender i made a mask and painted it with the vertex paint. when i imported it to unity the paint is not on the mask. how can i stop that from happening? I tried adding a material but it would just change to the backround color of the material.
The problem you may have is that all standard shaders don't use vertex colors. (as far as i know) I would recommend searching the web for a unity shader that displays vertex colors.

Did you export the texture to your Assets folder (or subfolder thereof)?
He said he used vertex paint, so i guess he don't uses a texture at all. But maybe i got it wrong but vertex painting normally refers to setting the vertices colors with some kind of a brush. But as i said the default shaders in Unity don't use the vertex colors at all. For example: diffuse shader: every vertex is just colored with the single color you can set as shader parameter and is then combined with the texture (if you have one)
i didn't use a texture but in blender when i change the mode to game mode the paint goes away, so does that have to do anything with it?
