Unity will not let me script

I am fairly new to unity and game design in general, everything seems to work except for the scripting function. I have tried multiple ways to get to it, but nothing has worked. when i click on the editing button the MonoDevelop logo shows on the bar (I'm using a Mac) with the unity logo in the corner, then immediately disappears. Whats wrong with it, or am I doing something wrong?
