Lerpz Escapes question

I am an intro to game design student and I have been working in Unity on the Lerpz Escapes game on my spare time. I do not know much when it comes to programming yet, so I have been having some issues with things I want to add to the game. I showed my teacher what I have been working on, and he wants me to show it off during our game showcase at the start of next month. However, I want to modify some things and add some things to the game so it is not just a copy of Lerpz Escapes game from the guide. So, I need some help on how to get some things to work.

1) Timer! I have searched around and have found some info on timers, but I am still confused on how to get it to work. I would like the timer to sit at the top center of the screen and counts down from a set amount of time. If the time runs out, it displays the Game Over screen. Where would I add the code for this? Like I said, I am still very new to this, so the more details, the better.

2) A score screen. This would display just before the Game Over screen or on the game over screen if it is easier. I would also like a running total at the top left of the GUI when playing the game. It would award 5 points per fuel cell picked up, 15 points per heart picked up, and 1 point per second that is left on the timer. I have not spent much time looking into the code to make this work, but from what I have found, it doesn't seem that hard. Its my lack of programming knowledge that is holding me back.

3) On the Start Menu screen, I would like to add an Info button. When clicked, it would take the player to another screen that displays game controls and a basic backstory of the game. I have figured out how to add the Info button in the Start Menu, but when clicked, it just restarts the Start Menu and does not link to the Info scene I have created. I am not at home right now, so I can't post what the code is, but all I did was modify the start menu scene to include the Info button and link it to an Info scene. Any ideas how to get this working?

Thanks for any help you can provide! I am really enjoying working with the program so far and I know I will only get better with programming as time goes on. I just want to show off a more complete version of the game instead of the buggy and incomplete version I have now.

In answer to Question 1 see this answer

For Question 2 see this answer

For Question 3 you will most likely need a new scene that displays your info controls. Then use Application.LoadLevel to load the level.

In my honest opinion if you have completed the Lerpz Escapes tutorial and you can't at least have a stab at these yourself then you weren't really "learning" from the tutorial. You should start with something a lot simpler such as mini-games so you grasp the basics of scripting.

I highly reccomend:

  • Unity3DStudent
  • CannedMushrooms on Youtube

From there think of some small game ideas that will only take you a week to complete (don't worry about graphical assets etc) and use the thousands of answers on here as well as the scripting reference.

Hope all this helps :)
