Importing Scene with Multiple Animated Objects (Blender->Unity)

I've made a simple test scene in blender containing 1 square and 1 cylinder. It also contains 1 armature, with 1 bone controlling the square and 1 bone controlling the cylinder (both being linked to the armature). Each object has 1 animation.

On importing, Unity finds the animations just fine, and the previews show the correct animation being paired with the correct object.

The problem is that once I've imported the fbx file into unity, I'll end up getting one of these problems: -Try to use the new "generic" rig option (where I can see the previews), unity tells me to use legacy (throws an error in the console). -Using Legacy: only one animation will work, period. Even if the animation component only has 1 animation, one of them won't work (haven't figured out why it only lets 1 work). -Using Legacy: tried moving 1 animation component to each object (which I don't think you are supposed to do), and neither object will animate at all.

-So, is there any way to bring this together? - A "animated scene with multiple objects?"

-I've considered making one big animation, but I'm afraid that when scaled up, it will become overly difficult to script/work with in unity (if at all). I've also thought about making 1 animated object at a time, but with this project eventually being very speed/spatially based, building and animating objects isolated from each other would be a major pain to deal with in unity.

Thanks for reading, any help is appreciated
