Is it possible to disable Mecanim at runtime?

Hey,

So I've read the documentation and it says that this is not supported, and indeed when I do set the controller's enabled to false at runtime very strange things start happening.

I know that on their blog in the Mecanim roadmap they mentioned swapping of controllers at runtime as a feature they hope to implement at some point in the future, however, that is not too much use to me at the moment.

So I was wondering if anyone has found a work around/a safe way to remove or disable an Animator Controller attached to a game object at runtime? Or is it simply a case of having to wait for an update from the Unity guys?
