I would highly recommend this site.

The iTween software is free and the pre-made examples are very very cheap. It makes animation for the beginner very easy.

Also this site has a simple user interface for use with iTween.

You would actually need to create the animations inside a modeling tool such as Maya, 3DS Max, Sketchup Pro, or another tool.

However, there is a tutorial for using the animation system inside unity here

It's not entirely true that you need to create animations externally. There is also the built in Animation View, that you link to. This is probably what you meant though, I just wanted to point out its possible to play around with animations without external programs.

If you want a quick 5 minute tutorial video you could try this site: http://www.unity3dstudent.com/2010/09/intermediate-i02-basic-animation-and-events/

And if you're like me (new to unity and game developement) you'll probably find a lot of this guy's other videos really helpful. Normally, I don't advertise other people's websites, but since he does everything basically for free and his site has been an unvaluable resource for me, I feel obligated.
