iPhone 5 4" retina splash screen does not show in Unity app
The build keeps defaulting to stretching the lower resolution version even though I manually replaced the splash screens in xcode
Also, it appears there is no way to set a landscape splash screen in xcode for the 4" retina screen?

Which Unity version and Xcode version are you using? Try to use the latest versions which already has the slots for the new iOS sizes.
xcode is updated to latest on mountain lion.. by latest version, are you talking about unity 3.5.7?
I just recently started a brand new project for iOS using unity 3.5.7 and XCode 4.5.2 and I had all the slots for the iPhone, iPod touch normal and retina display, as well as for ipad, and ipad retina, as well as the iPhone 5.
All looks ok without distortions. Double check your image sizes.
Ipad slots are available for landscape and portrait modes. However for the iphone / ipod slots there are just portrait slots. The iphone 5 slot says "high res iphone tall" in Unity.
If you want to use a landscape splash screen on iphone / ipod, just orient it on that way and keep it in vertical mode.
okay unity 3.5.7 is still downloading... i guess they finally fixed that!
