Question by Paulius-Liekis · Nov 30, 2016 at 09:01 AM · uingui

Is NGUI better than Unity UI?

I have been using NGUI for a long time. It does its job. I have considered switching to Unity UI ~1.5 year ago, but it felt like Unity UI was still behind - we simply couldn't build some things that we needed easily.

So is NGUI is still better than Unity UI? Why?

each will have its strengths and weakness. in my opinion ONGUI is more for the scripter where as Unity UI is more for the artist. so it really comes down to preference and need.

OnGUI? That's more meant for the Unity 3.x scripter... ;)

What does this have to do with OnGUI? I'm talking about NGUI (https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/2413) - the UI library that everyone used before Unity UI was developed.

I can't think of a reason why anyone would buy NGUI now considering that the inbuilt UI is based on very similar functionality and (TTBOMK) has very similar performance.

But if you're already using NGUI then there might not be compelling reason to change either.

Basically, they're very similar. Unity UI is free. Use whatever works best for you.

I head that NGUI has better performance. It also has better anchoring system. And it has more components. Am I missing any pros in Unity UI besides it being free?

I don't use NGUI so I couldn't say. I don't have any performance issues with 30 canvases on the screen. How can anchoring be "better"?! What components do you want? Unity UI is extensible and there are plenty of repositories of custom contributed UI modules. Or you just build your own if you have a specific requirement.

NGUI has better anchoring, because it has more freedom - you're not limited to anchoring to parent object, but you can anchor all 4 sides to different components ins$$anonymous$$d.
