Question by studibaker · Nov 29, 2010 at 02:16 AM · shadowscullingfree

Directional light is being pushy

I've got a directional light set up as a sun in an outdoor scene, but the light seems to affect the interiors of buildings also. How can I get it to only react to exposed areas? Is this a culling issue or is this the result of no shadows in the free version?

This would probably be the result of no shadows in the free version of Unity.
However, if you have Unity 3, I believe that you can lightmap a scene with the free version. Once you bake the non-realtime shadows onto the scene, the light should not affect the interior.

I really like Unity and appreciate all that they offer for free of charge, especially being a mac user and all,but it seems like this should be a basic thing. Other than go thru the learning curve of lightmapping, my only other alternative is to shell $1000.00 for the pro version just to get the light to obey natural physics.

I completely understand. I do know that some other game engines, such as Unreal (see the amazing lighting in the demo here: http://youtu.be/$$anonymous$$Gf0oGGGQqQ) offer light effects like these for free, but out of all the good ones, Unity seems to be the only one which you can use commercially for free.

Are any of the other game engines (other than Blender) available for the mac? At this point, i'm a non-profit entity. It seems like Unity has a bright future but is $1000.00 worth the cost of an education on it. Will there be any $$ payoff in the end by knowing how to use Unity in terms of employment?

Thanks for the info! Out of all the apps there, Unity seems to have the best graphics. I'm still messing with the shadows but I found a link with info on doing the lightmapping in Cheetah3d and got pretty good initial results. Here is the link if it helps anyone else: http://marraboy.blogspot.com/2009/08/light-mapping-room-with-cheetah3d.html#comment-form
