Memory comsumption greater than 500 mb due to Texture?

A main menu is loaded first which consumes around 20mb of memory. When a player loads the game level scene from the menu, the memoy comsumption jumps up to approximately 0.65 gb. The scene loads around 150 cubes and spheres, as well as a texture as 2d sprites (the game is 3d.) The profiler reports under memory that 2162 textures are loaded consuming 417.1 mb of memory.

How is it that textures are consuming this much memory?

Even with all GameObjects in the scene disabled, the texture count and memory are still the same. If you need more info please ask, I really need to get this fixed! ANY help greatly appreciated.

What is the resolution of the Textures you are using? The larger or better quality an Image has to do with how much memory is being used.
