Do I need 3ds max???
Okay, so I downloaded a model, imported the .max .obj and .3DS file in to Unity. After I do it says it has a error it says like "i need 3ds max downloaded and set as the defualt application" and it says under that something like "on line(like 221)" but do I need 3ds max? If so can I use like Blender???
Have you checked the documentation for importing models?
http://docs.unity3d.com/Documentation/$$anonymous$$anual/HOWTO-importObject.html
Can I just get blender, change the .max file to .blend and it changes into a blend file or do I need to put the .max file in blender and save it as .blend file? Or do I do that to the .3DS file? ._.
I don't think you will be able to open .max with anything else except 3ds$$anonymous$$ax. Just use .3ds or .obj files (you said you have them for the same model).

Yes, you need 3dsMax installed if you want to use .max files directly in your project. Just use .fbx or .blend (with Blender) files.

Max files can't be converted without 3ds Max, at least not right now. I knew some people who tried to make an importer from max to obj, but they didn't managed to create it...
