Particle System (shuriken) with mesh particles, change color?

Howdy-

I have a mesh particle system, using shuriken.

I'd like to be able to have each particle be a different color, between two points or two gradients as you can do with the 2d particles. However I have to apply a material to the 3d particles - is there a way to do this?
