Question by UnityDeveloper99 · Mar 06, 2012 at 08:41 AM · webplayerfreezebrowser

How can one limit the Unity Web Player's browser freezing?

The Unity Web Player is a great way to share online 3D work no doubt about it, but no one can deny that it has bigger tendencies to freeze browsers than the other multimedia browser viewers out there.

Before you start arguing that it's obviously a problem with my hardware let me tell you I have done extensive testing of this, on Mac, PC and Linux, laptop and desktops and using Firefox, Chrome, Safari even IE, with an ADSL internet connection. Also, this is in no way a question about how to fix one of my projects, as I have used the official Unity website live demos for all of my testing.

Now, I am not bagging the Web Player technology. I am simply asking others about their experience and how they have avoided this issue with their online games, because quite frankly this sort of thing will have a very negative impact on anyone trying to play Unity games.

Any relevant advice welcome.

There are many factors worth considering when using browser technology such as the Unity webplayer. Although browser multimedia such as Flash may be generally considered as more stable at the time of this writing it is no where near as powerful. Here are a few simple things to consider when troubleshooting Unity webplayer problems:

1) The graphics card - the performance capabilities will have a large effect on the user experience and the quality able to be achieved

2) Computer Hardware - similar to the above, but concerning also other technical aspects of the workstation being used to view the webplayer content

3) Anti Virus - Some antivirus programs are known to slow the webplayer down for a number of factors. There is an entire forum post about this on the Mixamo Community website, which features extensive use of the Unity webplayer

There are many more potential things which could be responsible for browser freeze or lag, and these can be found by searching here, on the Unity forums and on the forums or FAQ pages of websites using the webplayer extensively.

I didn't actually know about the Anti virus software one so thanks for the tip. I found the post on $$anonymous$$ixamo you were talking about and it seems a few people are having this problem. Great find!
