Do I have any legal methods to fight people stealing assets from my game?
This is a hypothetical question for me (thankfully) but not for others. Suppose I as a hobbiest developer release a game. What legal and other methods can I employ to prevent people from stealing models, music, and other aspects of my game, flipping them, and releasing a game of their own with these stolen assets? If I do not register the game’s assets under copyright, will I be unable to take any legal action?
You could look into the case fairly recently where a dev got banned from S$$anonymous$$m for flipping assets in that manner. I doubt the offending dev went to court, but you can appeal to vendors like Valve or CD Projekt Red if you notice anything like that and supply proper documentation showing your rights to the assets in question to get them thrown off the largest sales platforms.
