Can I Make A Nav-Mesh With Planes In Indie Unity?
I have Unity3D free and was wondering if I could use planes to navigate in my own A* script without performance taking a hit. I also hope to create a Nav-Mesh generation feature using planes as well, if not too excruciatingly painful .
As long as you have the mesh data (imported from a modeling program or generated using some sort of editor tool), it seems like it would be possible to generate the graph structure from the mesh data (I believe you have access to mesh data through Unity's $$anonymous$$esh class, even in Unity Free).
After generating the graph structure, you can then run the A* algorithm on the graph nodes. Unless I'm missing something, it should be totally possible to implement this all in free Unity. The only limitation I can see is that you'd have to implement the code in C# or Unityscript, since you'd need Pro to use C/C++ code through the plugin interface.
You can access mesh data in unity indie but if this is your first time dealing with path finding I would suggest starting out small like creating an A* script that uses a grid of nodes.
