Open 2D animation clip from Project Pane

I am a beginner, and some parts of the 2D animation workflow are very confusing to me. Can anyone explain the concept of why I can't open an Animation Clip from the Project Pane to edit it? Even though it has an 'Open' button in the upper right corner? (By contrast, I can open Animation Controllers from the Project Pane to edit them.)
