Can a variable be passed from a SWF created with Unity3D?

With the Unity3D SWF export, can a variable be passed out of the SWF? The SWF may have interactions that would need to be communicated to the shell (HTML or other SWF) that loads the SWF. Can we influence the nature of variable with the Unity created SWF within Unity prior to the creation of the Unity3D SWF?
