Will Mecanim make the Locomotion System obsolete in Unity 4?
As probably anyone else who has seen the Mecanim videos, I'm really excited to test out the new Unity 4 character animation features. The one thing that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere though is what is going to happen to the old Locomotion System post Unity 4? Is it being taken over by Mecanim and rendered obsolete, or will the two systems be able to work together? This is important since I don't want to make all my characters using the Loco system and then later find out I have to update them all to the Mecanim system.
The preview I saw, seems that way. But awaiting opinion of someone who has used it.
Currently they work together but I think oldest gonna disappear.
As far as I understand though $$anonymous$$ecanim is only for blending animation, or will it handle the entire procedural limb adjustment when climbing uneven surfaces as well?

According to Rune (Locomotion System creator) the new Mecanim will not have built in procedural foot placement in Unity 4 at least. Since the old animation system, which the Locomotion System uses, is going to be phased out in favour of the new there will not be any updates to the Locomotion System either. So you will be able to choose between the two, but at the moment won't be able to use both. More info here.
