using htaccess and htpassword

I want to download a file from an iphone app. Could I just put the file in a protected (apache htaccess htpassword) directory on a server then download it with www using Username:Password@http://theaddress? as the url?

Or do I have to do something else with wwwform?

I found this page but not sure if it's necessary for htaccess htpassword types of requests if they are not coming from a form.
