What is global illumination and how is it used?
Title says it all. I keep hearing about it and have know idea what it is. Does it have to do with lightmapping?

It is a technique to achieve more realistic lighting. This Wikipedia article explains it pretty well. Unity supports static Global Illumination using lightmapping in Unity Pro.
