Question by DMCH · Mar 06, 2013 at 05:34 PM · projectunity4migrationunity3.5

Should I upgrade to Unity 4

Hello,

I'm about halfway through making a game, and the question of upgrading to unity 4 has been niggling at me on and off. It's my first game, and I'm using Unity 3.5.6 Free, the game is a fairly simple 2d game for PC.

I've read about people having trouble migrating projects, and would like to know if there i'm missing anything by not moving to 4. I've read the features of 4, and given the nature of my game, nothing jumps out at me as must have, but I wonder if 4 has better support for win 8, and newer hardware. To be honest, I'm wary ever to upgrade to the latest version of unity 3.5, given that everything is working at present, but maybe this is overly cautious :)

My current plan is to continue developing the current game in 3.5.6 and switch over (hopefully get unity pro) when I've made the final version. Does this seem sensible?

Thanks for reading!

Sure, just back up first.

I think the only reason to not upgrade yet is my reason : I still have the free versions of iOS and Android publishing they offered for a month as a promotion, so I've been holding off as long as possible because I'm going to lose that and have to pay $500 to get them back. And I'll continue to wait, because if this game I'm working on fails to make me enough money to upgrade to Unity 4 (my first even didn't make enough to cover the App Store yearly subscription!) it's probably going to mean the end of my short-lived indy game developer 'career' anyway.

Thanks for the info. Sorry to hear your first game didn't go so good. Hope things go better on your second release!

there's a unity 4 PRO 30 day trial :)

the only major upgrade is mecanim, which I'm not really a big fan of xD If I'd be you I'd wait 'till unity releases their new GUI system :)

here's a upgrade guide :) http://docs.unity3d.com/Documentation/Manual/UpgradeGuide3540.html

Thanks for the input. Yeah, I code GUIs by hand, and its really time consu$$anonymous$$g. Hopefully the new GUI will be drag and drop/WYSIWYG!

If you have 100$ you can check out NGUI on the asset store :)

Considered buying it. Tried out the free version. From what I saw, it didn't seem to handle scaling very well, using anchors, rather than adjusting the components to screen size. That said, I was pretty tired the night I tried it : )

I had no trouble upgrading my project from Unity 3.5 Pro to Unity 4.1 Pro. I wanted the redesigned UI though, so for me that was important enough to justify the upgrade.

Well, it depends. Do you have a big project going in your version of unity? Are you ready to go into a new version that has items that are not familiar with?
