Blocking particles then destroy then reduce health

Hi, I'm working on something where I want an object the player is controlling to block particles being emitted, then destroy the particles and reduce the health of the player controlled object. this would be an iphone game so would be all touch controlled. Any ideas where to start? Thank you!!!
