Question by surfer695 · Aug 22, 2012 at 06:43 AM · mesh3dwaves

How can I make 3D waves in Unity?

I am trying to make 3D waves that you would normally see at the beach. Big waves that crash and could be "surfable" not just a wave that has no form. I want it to look like this sample image. That is what I am aiming for, is there a way to simulate/replicate that?

Cheers

Furthermore...

Does anyone know of any Wave Starter Kits? How did they make those waves in Kelly Slater? It can't be that hard to recreate them can it?

In can I make them in blender? It's another 3d modelling program, are there any tutorials on how to make waves in those programs? Can you post the link if u find a video of it.

Damn $$anonymous$$elly Slater pro surfer...sniff...$$anonymous$$ike Stewart pro bodyboarding...sniff...Well, I would start with a normal sine wave to shape the bottom of it. Like the dark part of your picture. Then attach to the top of it another object shaped like the edge of the wave with a particle emitter attach to the very end of it to create the splash. The object would then be stretched and moved to create the "tube" and close the wave. Easier said than done. $$anonymous$$aybe there is a simpler version. And the game is $$anonymous$$elly Slater Pro Surfing on PS2. A surf version of Tony Hawks.

YES YOU CAN USE BLENDER.

Good luck! Regarding your question about Blender. Unity3D is a "game engine" used by programmers for stuff. You'd have to find a great forum about Blender and model making. Good luck!

Looks like the MegaFiers system has added a modifier that can do waves https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sFCPfc7mDU

Here are the steps I took to replicate crashing ocean waves.

1) I downloaded this 3d wave model from maya. http://www.creativecrash.com/3d-model/wave-pro-1-5-3d-model

2) I then exported control vertices for the wave nurbs control splines into unity

3) Next use this bezier surface script on the vertices http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/68832-B-Spline-Surface

4) Here are my results so far: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbpDLVGGsR8&feature=youtu.be

This looks great softocean. I was recently conceptualizing a game using a simulated ocean wave for surfing. This looks fairly nice so far, but the trick is rigging up the wave with physics and player collision and incorporating input variables.

Great work so far!

Softocean, once you export all to unity, which are the steps you follow exactly? Can you give me more details on that? I am having trouble animating the wave in Unity. Thanks
