Question by MasterPDON · Nov 14, 2015 at 05:20 PM · textureatlas

How large can a texture atlas be?

Let's say I have an open world with 9 buildings (of course, the numbers of buildings in an open world is far more than 9) and each building has a 512x512 texture. If I am to combine these textures into an atlas, would it be a 1536x1536 texture? This texture atlas thingy's got me really confused because atlases contain far more than 9 textures. Also is it possible/practical to put all textures in an open world into one atlas? Thanks.

Hello.

Yes, you could put all 9 textures in an atlas. The size would be 1536x1536.

A texture atlas contains however many textures are relevant...im not sure where you came up with they contain more then 9 textures (though sometimes they do, sometimes they dont).

Is it possible to put all the textures in an open world in an atlas? Certainly. Practical. No. Read up on texture atlases with unity some, and you will see why it is not practical.

Thanks for your input. I have more than 200 objects in a scene. Since you say one atlas for an open world is impractical, I'm guessing I shouldn't put all textures into one atlas. But I want to have as few atlases as possible so I can use as few materials. So let's say I divide the atlases and I have 10 textures in one atlas. Each of these textures are 512x512. That's a 5120x5120 atlas. Is this ok?

10 textures that are 512 each is not a 5120x5120 texture. assu$$anonymous$$g they were in a 5x2 grid that is 2560x1024.

A Texture Atlas is not an easy thing, especially if you want to do mip-mapping. I would suggest looking in to using a texture atlas with unity a bit more before you proceed down this path.

Also if you feel the original question was answered, please accept my answer. Thank you.
