Help with Unity 3D animator (3D game)

I need help with the unity animator and how it works. I understand that you need to reference it in the code as I have done. I just need some one to explain how it works and how to make it use the animation on button press.

Here is a section of my code:

 **anim.SetBool ("Running", running);
 
 if (move > 0.1f && !Input.GetButton("Run") && canControl)

``{ rigidbody.velocity = new Vector3(move maxWalkspeed, rigidbody.velocity.y); angle = 90; running = false; }*

Hope you can tell me what is wrong with it
