Videoclip codec for mobile devices
Is there a videoclip codec that will work across all or the majority of mobile devices?
In the Unity documentation, they recommend the H264 and VP8 codec. However, I have had issues with both codecs.
In Unity 2017.1.0f3, I created an empty scene with only a camera and removed the directional light. I added the video player component to the camera, included the desired video clip, set the Wait for first frame to off and set the Render Mode from Render Texture to Camera Far Plane.
Concerning the videoclip import settings a few settings were modified. I set Override for iPhone to on, set the Transcode to on and set the Codec to either H264 or VP8 depending on the codec in the video.
The following are two devices in which I ran the tests.
Ipad Mini (Model number: A1432 IOS Version: 9.3.5) Issues with both codecs no matter the video resolution and file size. H264 causes ghosting and VP8 will cause lag.
Iphone (Model Number: A1533 IOS Version: 10.3.1) Best Codec result: 1280X720 VP8 with very minor lag (almost seemless).
