A truly stand-alone .exe?
I was wondering if it is possible to build an executable that does not require the use of an outside data folder.

This is not possible through Unity. You will have to use another program to pack the data folder and .exe file together and create a new .exe for you.
For example Smart Packer.
It appears that $$anonymous$$oleBox is no longer in business. The link provided as of 5/12/2016 is a blog related to online dating.
Thanks for the heads up. I removed the link to $$anonymous$$oleBox.
But, is it still possible to open the data files once its stored in the exe?
Is there any good free programs that do what smart packer does? @GameVortex

If you encounter a broken link on the internet, there's a simply 3 step procedure you should follow:
Visit https://web.archive.org/
Copy the broken link into the input field and hope there's a snapshot of the website.
If there is, just grab one from the past and enjoy the content.
