Question by bpears · Dec 22, 2012 at 06:22 PM · meshmodellimit

Can unity handle this city (it's multiple meshes)?

Here are the stats as a whole, & the textures are pretty basic. It is a large map, so it won't all be in field of view at once. I'd say it's about a square mile.

Edges: 6,017,990 Faces: 2,373,246 Component Instances: 23,593 Groups: 7,531 Images: 85 File size: 113MB

This is using google sketchup pro.

In a word, sketchup is total crap. Don't use it with Unity - well, just don't use it. it's just not a 3D or gamedev tool. It is what it is.

Note that Blender is FREE ... i recommend Cheetah3D (it cost like 4 dollars) if you can't afford Autodesk products.

Given that Blender is FREE it's difficult to see why anyone would touch google crap. So, I hope it helps!!! Blender == utterly free. Cheetah3D == a few dollars.

I have been using Blender for several years now and it is a FANTASTIC tool with an extremely vibrant and helpful community. It is one of my most valuable assets.

You guys are probably right, but I find sketchup just soooo easy and user friendly... $$anonymous$$y models are not too detailed anyway. I'm sure I could always toss it into blender if need be. I have 3dsmax, blender, sketchup. The only reason I choose sketchup is for simplicity. But it's getting to the point that I will probably need to switch over soon to model uneven terrain-ed part of the map. This part of it is flat, so yeah.

The problem with sketchup is the quality of its models, they are full of topology problems; holes and overlapping and ambiguous faces, detail doesn't matter compared to that.

Try it.

...

If your mesh has too many vertices or triangles - I forget which - Unity won't accept it. The limit per mesh is 65535 of whichever of those is the limiter.

Other than that, the limiting factor will be the system running the project and how well you occlude invisible stuff.

Thanks, yea I know about the mesh limit, no single meshes are that crazy. Actually, I'm surprised at how high the specs are now, everything is low to medium poly for the most part... $$anonymous$$aybe sketchup is still double facing stuff... hmmmm...
