Get dynamic persistent asset reference

I need to store prefab references in an editor tool to a prefab file.

The easiest way would be to store the pathes, but as soon as they are somehow moved, the link is broken.

I don't want to serialize the Gameobjects either, as I require the user to pick objects from the project panel which is why that would be horribly inefficient.

What I would like to have is an id stored for each meta file of the objects so I can get the object based on it's associated meta. That way, if the object is moved inside the Unity Editor the link persists.

Any idea how I can achieve that?
