Non MMO Persistent World
How would I make a non MMO game that has a persistent world. For example Petz, and Virtual Villagers are offline games that continue and grow long after you've quit the game, although the game isn't running from a server.
I'm trying to make a single player game which things stay on course while the game isn't running. At the moment all I have is a GUI timer, and I'd like to test the persistent world by seeing that when the game has been quit and started up again, the timer continues.
If you want to check how much time has really passed (sorry, I don't understand it too well because I never played Petz or Virtual Villagers), then you could use UNIX time. Then when they boot the game back up, you calculate what happened before they get in-game, so it looks like stuff was happening while they were gone (but it really happened when they opened the game again).
Ok, thank you, I suspected as much. I'm very new to scripting and game engine mechanics, I was unsure how it would work. I think I'll take up this challenge at a later stage.
@Fattie: WHERE?! I $$anonymous$$UST HAVE ITS PICTURE BEFORE IT GOES EXTINCT!
@fafase. Say for instance, I had a timer that started when you begin a new game. Is it possible that when the game closes at 00:03:23(hrs:$$anonymous$$:sec) and opens 2 and a half hours later, the program can work out how much time has passed and update the timer to 02:33:23?
