Assets Disappearing

When I put assets into my level they disappear once I save and randomly when I do other things like moving the first person controller around. It only saves my terrain and nothing else. How do I save the assets where they wont disappear and how do I keep them from disappearing when I make changes to other things?

I use Unity 3.0 on a HP Pavilion Entertainment PC with Windows Vista.
