Imported Maya models look dark, ignore lights.

Hi guys, first I want to say how much I appreciate all the advice given on this forum. I'm in my senior year (CS major) and hope to enter front-end game programming so I'm teaching myself Maya/Unity over the summer. This forum has been invaluable.

Anyways, created an animated model in Maya 2016, imported the FBX files into Unity 5 and the textures look dark, and do not really respond to lighting. Everything butt he character is STATIC (lighting is baked). In the screen grabs below, the model looks okay in the scene view, but not in the game view. The scene is lit with a directional light. Then next screen grab I created an additional spot light , right in the characters face. It light him up a little but it still looks dark. Any suggestions?
