Question by MachCUBED · May 28, 2012 at 11:48 PM · iosterrainmobileiphoneipad

Unity 3.5 allows terrains on iPad2 and newer iOS devices, what's the max terrain size?

I saw this in the documentation: http://unity3d.com/support/documentation/Components/script-Terrain.html

Under iOS, it says "Due to performance hit, Terrain Engine usage is discouraged on pre-ipad2 devices.", indicating that terrains can be used on the iPad2, new iPad, and iPhone4S. What is the maximum terrain size on those devices?

@$$anonymous$$achCUBED From my experience on my android(1GHz dual-core chip w/ 1GB DDR2 RA$$anonymous$$), regardless of the terrain being 1x1 or 100x100 i get a HUGE framerate drop and super long load time. I wouldn't suggest using Unitys terrain for mobile releases, it looked like a slide show. I expect it to be the same on ios, have you tried a test build to see what your frame rate is?

well, a test built to my iPad2 showed a bad framerate. Lesson: release the game on $$anonymous$$acOS, Windows, and consoles only.
