Question by h0stis · Aug 24, 2012 at 10:57 AM · physicsrope

Is it possible to make a realistic rope using the interactive cloth?

I've been playing whith the interactive cloth for about a day, but could not make it to behave it correctly.

So I have an oil pump model. A rope mesh(1) is a child of the horsehead(the thing that goes up and down), so it goes up and down with the horsehead. The rope mesh has the interactive cloth component and attached to the horsehead with the help of a box collider(2). Down below there is another object(3) is attached to the rope mesh with the help of its own collider. So the basic idea is when the horsehead goes up and down(4), the rope goes up and down like a rope should and with it the object(3) goes up and down(4) as well.

But I'm facing a number of problems that I have not solved yet.

1) When the animation starts and the horsehead goes down the rope becomes all jagged and wavy.

2) The rope mesh(to which the interactive cloth component is attached) doubles itself. So I have at the same time an interactive rope(wavy one) and the rigid rope mesh. When I stop animation(not pause) there is again only one mesh. Why? This one is solved.

3) The rope looks like it is empty inside so it looks more like an empty cellophane tube then a steel cable. And it streches a lot. alt text

So what can be done to fix the problems?
