Question by alexm87 · Jan 25, 2012 at 01:05 AM · gridmap

Can Unity do......

Ok I'm new to unity , so hi and thanks for taking the time to read this!

First question can i create a huge scale cube or sphere universe and split it into smaller components (grids containing solar systems) loading only the one the player is in (multiple players so they can't see in other grids without exploring them (fog of war almost) and ofcourse to limit the overall load on the system? If not do you know of any programmes that could..

Secondly, In an mmog environment how would I even approach the issue of 'mining'. How do I give a rock values that can be transferred to a player if mined in unity or could you direct me to a resources area that deals with these idiotic questions.

Thirdly in an environment where a player joins, and begins civ building , how do I have the game provide that player with a set of resources , units, base in an already player occupied map?

Anyway thankyou for any helpful and productive responses and hope to hear from you soon!

If you have 3 questions, post 3 questions. Besides, the other two are basic game-design things- they really have nothing to do with Unity at all...

Answering the first question, if you dont mind a loading screen between each zone it is very possible using playerPrefs to store values of previously explored areas. This would allow you to explore an area (unfog it) and keep it "unfogged" for as long as you wish. You could just create each area as a seperate scene with a short loading time between each.

If it is an open world game you are creating then i am unsure i'm afraid.

I suspect that playerprefs would get a little heavy if there's a lot of data you need to store, however (I'm thinking resources values for each individual asteroid, stats for passing ships, lots of fun stuff).

I was presu$$anonymous$$g he only really wanted things such as the fog to be stored as it appears to be an mmo esque game, things such as $$anonymous$$ing nodes and enemies would be respawning anyway

Thanks so much! Are there any options of having the seperate areas that don't involve a loading screen, just seemless travel into the next area? This isn't 1st person either..the players can control hundreds of ships, so if they are fired out in all directions will the player see all the loading screens ?

I think you should start small and work up. You'll just make things hard for yourself otherwise.

Scaylamoth - I appreciate your opinion and thanks for taking the time to post in here but I'm just looking for insight into these problems, I understand the concept of starting small and working your way up however in this case I'm user no time limits, so I'm jumping in the deep end. I'm going to begin learning JavaScript and the basics of using maya on Monday, I'm going to download unity and have a toggle about and watch some tuts and just absorb the key things I need to know.

However this is more about me getting some direction and answers on the problems at hand.
