Why is Unity taking up hdd space when I'm using it?

Basically, whenever I open a certain project and work on it for a while, I notice that my HDD space has shrunk by a couple of GBs. Sometimes after working, I have lost 15GB. Whenever I restart my macbook, most of the lost memory is back again. What could be causing the problem?
