Question by Kiloblargh · Aug 31, 2012 at 11:08 PM · iosnetworkingtutorialdemo

Is there an up-to date iOS networking tutorial / demo available?

MPStarTrooper is all I could find but that thing dates back to when Unity iPhone was a separate application. And the PDF mentions "Unity iPhone 1.6."

Surely there's a better example to start from now? But where?

Hmm, is there some confusion here?

Unity's networking works wonderfully .. on iOS. There is no "iOS networking" ... you just do Unity networking, and it works.

That's the whole point. It would be like if you said "oh how do I get PhysX to work with iOS in Unity?" or "In Unity where are the tutorials for rigidbidy with iOS?" Heh!

If you're talking about (for some bizarre reason) writing your own native iOS networking code and then using that in a Unity project ... well you could but it would be a bit bizarre you or I wouldn't be better than Unity's $$anonymous$$m of iOS networking engineers you know?

BTW a fascinating product ..

You, everyone, should download it immediately and play with it, it's neat.

BTW on the Asset store there are endless packages, tutorials etc for Networking in Unity3D. (Obviously these all work perfectly w/ iOS - or any of the other novelty platforms Unity builds too.)

I don't think that there is too many iOS networking tutorials because they aren't appealing to most Unity users. I would just use Unity Answers and the Scripting Reference unless you find one.

Hmm. So what are most Unity users interested in? I thought iOS was still the place to be- and after making one single player game, I just think they're boring compared to versus play.

If I do find one, I'll do what I can to popularize it on the forums.

It does kind of seem like internet multi-player support for iOS Basic is ultra-low priority / being phased out/ backburnered etc. But come on, Unity devs; $400 is $400; smartphones and tablets are the game platform of the now and future, the App Store is where all the paying customers are at, and the appeal of multiplayer is, well, why lovemaking is preferable to wanking. Throw us a friggin' bone already!

( Just read up on and downloaded Photon yesterday, super excited. Then found out today that I need a Pro license to even try it. Now, thoroughly bummed. ) : /

The reason that they aren't appealing s because most people don't hav ethe iOS extension of unity. Therefore most tutorial websites try to please the largest crowd, the pc and $$anonymous$$ac devs

This is pretty much incorrect !

$$anonymous$$ost Unity3D development is for iOS, and most CO$$anonymous$$$$anonymous$$ERCIAL Unity3D development is for iOS.

In terms of actual sales for end dollars to users of things that start in the Unity editor, it's mostly iOS.

The only reason you don't see many networking examples (any platform) is that (A) networking code is incredibly difficult and (B) the few big companies that can do it well don't want to give anything away!

(Exactly as $$anonymous$$lob says "the App Store is where all the paying customers are" ...)
