What is mesh optimization?

I spent a few minutes making the model of a lamp with blender. It is a quite simple shape because it's just a cone with a negative part and a few connected cylinders.
However, once added to my game, it started to lag. When I removed the item, the lack of lag proved it was the source of the problem. Is there a way to reduce small details in these little objects? I've seen a lot of other games that run perfectly fine with much more complicated shapes.
You need to know that Unity renders 100k+ tri meshes just fine, it's not that. But there are ways of making very simple yet incredibly bad mistakes that makes your GPU suffer a heat stroke in every engine out there.
Mesh optimization techniques is not a main subject of this forum. You need to ask this q where technical artists hang out. Also, we can't help you when the only provided detail about the mesh is its general shape.
