Unity Editor Freezes Every Few Seconds
Hi,
I've been having this problem for the past few days. Unity seems to be on some sort of weird cycle where it runs fine for ~3 seconds, then totally freezes and becomes unresponsive for ~4, then back to working and it repeats. At first I thought it was just happening in play mode, but no, it happens just in editor too. I don't believe I have any code running in edit mode (certainly nothing remotely intensive), so I don't think it's something weird with a script. Other posts have said something about the new collab features causing similar issues, but I'm not using them, and even when working offline this still happens.
I've also tried opening a blank project or other old projects, but the same thing happens.
If anyone knows what is causing this or how to stop it that would be great, because it's really killed my productivity the last few days.
Thanks!
Edit: It's been a but over a week now, and after struggling with it and even reinstalling Unity to see if that would help (it didn't appear to) I decided to let it sit for a while. Sure enough, I opened Unity this morning to find it running fine. Not sure what changed, but as long as it keeps working like this it's all good. Thanks to the people who suggested things, and I'll post again if the problem returns.
If you open up the task manager and observe the processes: is unity, or some other process spiking CPU usage, every few seconds? Other stuff to check/try: free disk space, run defrag, full system AV scan, confirm unity project and exe files excluded from AV scanning.

It's the Visual Basic editor that's causing that.
Go to Edit > Preferences > External Tools and change the External Script Editor to something like Notepad++.
Once I did that I have no more freezes. That shit drove me nuts!,@Mons657

[Ctrl]-[Shift]-[Esc] Is anything taking up more than 80% CPU or memory?

Hello! this may be due to an old version of Unity, try upgrading to 5.6, it could be due to a computer that is on the older side. Or it could be something random. This happened to me once, it went away in a couple days.
I'm on 5.6.1f1 currently, but it's certainly possible that it's a computer issue. I'm still working mainly on a laptop from 2012.

Possible solution: I had this same problem - on playing the scene in the editor, it would run for around 7 seconds, then freeze/lock for about 5 seconds, then repeat this cycle. The culprit for me was Sophos antivirus software. If disabled, Unity ran normally without freezing. I was so relieved to have found the problem I haven't investigated why this is happening, but my best guess is the record files (simple text files) I'm writing to are being scanned as they update and this is holding things up.
