Question by DaveA · Nov 02, 2010 at 07:06 PM · animationcharacterbuymocap

Experience with Turbo Squid or other? Mocap?

I'm looking to add a character to my app.

I'm looking for opinions on what to get, or not to get.

I'm looking at sites like Turbo Squid and others. Does anyone have any experiences to share with buying from those places?

Is one format better than another? Should I get FBX or other?

If a character is rigged, but not animated, how hard is it to buy mocap data and attach that in Unity?

Any advice welcome.

well, i also have been getting most of my models from TurboSquid, and i noticed for me anyway, that anything in ".3DS" format tends to work more reliably than anything. but it can't be in $$anonymous$$AX files... they just show up with paper icons in unity, with NO object data. but anything, for example with the final name (the file names that are in your Windows or $$anonymous$$ac explorer) "ImAnObject.3DS" would be compatible with unity.

Yes, .max is a 'project' file, .3ds is a model file. It really s$$anonymous$$ms me when people package projects, and I can't afford no $3500 package just to convert the silly thing.

Yes.... I brought in some basic character that were rigged from TurboSquid - (Package:12-fantasy-character), then my friend (an animator) attached the a simple animation of walking and jumping to one model, and then I imported the model with the attached animation (He exported the animated models by FBX from Max). Now to make it work I just tell it to run through frames 1-8 to walk or frames 9 to 15 to jump, etc etc.. Play around with bringing the character (from Poser or anywhere), importing FIRST into a 3D pacakge like MAX, Blender, MAYA, etc, then animating it (ideally the model should be rigged first), then exporting the rigged/animated model as an animation out of your 3D package as an FBX into Unity (it should import it as a prefab)... Play around with that process a few times until it works... Thats my suggestion.

As far a MoCap - I too am experimenting with that.. will try to post an answer if I can.

Cheers! DJKR
