is Unity 4.x free ?
Hi ! I upgraded my unity 3d 3.5 up to unity 4 and i cant start it, and i have licence problem. And I think about that is not free. Am I correct ?
Unity 4 is not released and only works for those that have paid for Pro on pre-order. I would imagine that there will be a free version of Unity 4 when it is released.
There definitly will be a free version. It would be I guess one of the worst business decisions in a decade to give up on the 10th of thousands of indie developers who made Unity what it is today, publishing to the asset store and contributing to the communities. So no worries on that front :)

softrare, regarding your opinion on the nature of Going Public Via Free Stuff, the recent "face book" hyper-debacle has completely changed thinking on this.
every VC is now going around mumbling "well fuck this free stuff business, no wonder people used to look at those, what were they called, 'P&L' thingies"
personally i feel that if the free version of U3D was very cheap (exactly like Adobe, say - no mystery) it would weed out all the bad grammar on this site :)
I reckon the free versus pro debate rests on your exit strategy. If you have a long term exit then given the number of kids on here who are at school learning to program and use Unity, then the "no-brainer" decision to use Unity at schools will pay off.
Given the limitations without Pro seem well balanced to me - it's just us mugs that deal with the grammar for the most part. While I'm sure the number of free users can be used as a leading indicator for revenue growth and indeed this thriving community also demonstrates a validation of an investment case.
It needs a profissional licence to run, so, you need to buy it.

Unity 4 has never been released, but if you pre-ordered it you would get a beta version activation. Anyone can download it, but it only works for people who pre-ordered. When Unity 4 comes out they said there will be a free version just like Unity 3.
