Best coding approach for 2D "Depth Scroller" game
Hi all, I'm building a mobile app game where the player's character moves in X & Y, and sprites move (or appear to move) from far to near in Z axis, forcing the player to dodge them as they pass. ("Z Scroller"? "Depth Scroller"? Unsure of terminology.)
There could be a lot of sprites, so I need a coding approach that has really great performance. They will loosely form a "tunnel", with the appearance of terrain height changes and curves, that they must navigate the character through.
So what is the best approach? Do I just plop all the sprites down on the terrain, and move the camera and character through it, like a dolly in movie-making? Or change the scale and position of the sprites to simulate Z movement? Or something else? I need to get the architecture right the first time - thanks!
