Hingejoint2D on player with an attached parent animator?

Basically I want to have players in my game ragdoll after they get hit. I have all the hinge joints set up, but they don't seem to work when controlled by an animator. I've tried disabling the animator in script and it looks like it kind of works, but when I re-enable the animator, many of the parts of the ragdoll have weird rotations and movement.
